Ed Vokurka – May 19/13

Ed_Vokurka

Ed Vokurka, The Eclectic Jazz & Swing Violin Ensemble

Sunday, May 19 at 1:30 p.m.
Part of Sunday Concert Series

Violinist Ed Vokurka’s music is a unique blend of European classicism and North American Swing. He possesses a lyricism rarely found in a jazz violinist. In his eclectic approach to jazz, Ed is uniquely providing a missing link between his original Classical training and the Jazz world, which he embraces so passionately! Ed performed with the legendary Joe Venuti in the 70′s and has recently been featured at the prestigious Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto. He leads the Ed Vokurka Quintet "Violin Swing & Jazz Ensemble" steeped in the tradition of the Hot Club of 1930′s Paris. Truly an engaging & exciting performer who puts his all into every note.

San Agustin Duo

Sunday, April 21 at 1:30 p.m.

San Agustin Duo

Emma Banfield, violin
Diana Dumlavwalla, piano

Part of McMichael Sunday Concert Series

Diana and Emma met while studying together at Wilfrid Laurier University. Their debut performance as the San Agustin Duo at the Burgos International Music Festival in Spain was met with enthusiastic response and they have continued to garner praise for their warm sound, tight ensemble, and sincerity in performance. Their work has led to repeat invitations at several performance venues.

As faithful and sensitive performers of the standard repertoire for violin and piano, the San Agustin Duo also maintains a commitment to the performance of new compositions, especially by Canadian composers. Their performance at Gallery 345 in Toronto highlighting Canadian female composers is included in the Canadian Music Centre’s Ann Southam Archive.

In addition to their international work, they have performed across Ontario including recitals at Wilfrid Laurier University, University of Toronto’s Hart House, the Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber Music Society, University of Windsor, University of Guelph, Queen’s University and other established concert venues in Toronto, Kitchener, Waterloo and Guelph.
